Fall Weekend Guide: OAKtoberfest, Trick-or-Treat Dates, and Other Western Suburbs Events Worth Planning Around

One of the best parts of fall in the western suburbs is that nearly every town rolls out some kind of community event — a festival, a scavenger hunt, a trick-or-treat night downtown — that turns a Saturday afternoon into a genuine reason to get outside and explore your neighborhood. If you're househunting right now, these events are also a great, low-pressure way to get a feel for a town beyond what you see on a listing photo. Here's what's on the calendar this October.

In Glen Ellyn, OAKtoberfest takes place Saturday, October 10, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Lake Ellyn Park (645 Lenox Road). It's a free, family-friendly celebration of the park district's oak trees, with live music from School of Rock and The Fall Guys, hands-on art activities, face painting, a StoryWalk, guided oak tree tours, and a tree treasure hunt. The Conservation Foundation and Glen Ellyn Public Library will both have a presence, and The Beer Cellar will be pouring drafts for the 21-and-up crowd, with proceeds benefiting the Glen Ellyn Parks Foundation. It's weather-dependent, so if the forecast looks rough, check gepark.org/hotline for updates before you head over.

Downtown Downers Grove has a full slate of fall programming this year. A Fall Scavenger Hunt runs downtown from October 1 through October 23, giving families and downtown visitors an ongoing reason to wander the shops and streets throughout the month. Then, on Saturday, October 24, downtown hosts Halloween Window Painting alongside the DG Historical Society's Living Cemetery event, running from 9 a.m. to noon. The following day, Sunday, October 25, is Downtown Trick-or-Treating, a longtime tradition for the area.

Why mention all this on a real estate blog? Because when people ask me what it's actually like to live in a particular western suburb, the honest answer usually has less to do with square footage and more to do with things like this: a walkable downtown that hosts a scavenger hunt for three weeks straight, or a park district event that turns into a neighborhood tradition year after year. These are the kinds of details that don't show up in an MLS listing but end up mattering a lot once you've actually moved in.

If you're currently touring homes in Glen Ellyn or Downers Grove, I'd genuinely encourage you to build one of these events into your weekend plans. Grab a coffee downtown before OAKtoberfest, or swing by during the scavenger hunt window in Downers Grove and see how the downtown feels on a random Tuesday versus a Saturday afternoon. It tells you things a drive-by never will.

And if you're weighing a move to one of the other western suburbs — Lombard, Wheaton, Carol Stream, Bloomingdale, Lisle, Roselle, or Villa Park — I'm always glad to point you toward what's happening locally in any of those towns too, event calendars included. Sometimes the best way to decide where to put down roots is to simply go spend an afternoon there.

Have a favorite fall event in your town that I missed? I'd love to hear about it — feel free to reach out and let me know, and I may feature it in a future roundup.
